Recognised worldwide for its rigour, the Swiss education system<\/strong> has not, however, always been the unified model we are familiar with. The\u2019Swiss Maturit\u00e9 examination<\/strong>, often referred to as Swiss baccalaureate<\/strong> by our neighbours (to draw a parallel with the French baccalaureate<\/strong> or the French Baccalaureate<\/strong>), is the school-leaving certificate<\/strong> par excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He<\/strong> opens its doors today to the higher education institutions<\/strong>, whether they be Swiss universities<\/strong>, some universities<\/strong> classics, or even universities and federal institutes of technology<\/strong> (as the\u2019EPFL<\/strong> \u00e0 Lausanne<\/strong>). But this school-leaving certificate<\/strong> is the result of a long evolution of the upper secondary<\/strong>, at a time when everything was changing from\u2019from one canton to another<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the past, it was at the gymnasium<\/strong> which prepared students for higher education, providing a solid grounding in general knowledge<\/strong>. However, depending on the canton<\/strong>, entry requirements<\/strong> varied drastically. The\u2019A-level exams<\/strong> was specific to each cantonal school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What applied to a university<\/strong> What was local was not necessarily the same elsewhere. The rules changed in by canton<\/strong>, which significantly restricts a young student\u2019s mobility (even single<\/strong> and with no family ties) who wish to to continue one\u2019s studies<\/strong> or sign up to Swiss universities<\/strong> located far from his home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The catalyst for unification was the need to harmonise the\u2019admission<\/strong> academic. The State Secretariat<\/strong> (predecessor of the SEFRI<\/strong> (current) and the Confederation then launched the first federal law<\/strong> on the recognition of qualifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For to reach maturity<\/strong> and that it is valid in the three language regions<\/strong> across the country, success was now essential exams<\/strong> with a common standard. The Swiss Matura<\/strong> thus became the prestigious equivalent of a General A-levels<\/strong> of the very highest standard, officially recognising the completion of studies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the 20th century, the system diversified to meet the needs of society. The cantons<\/strong> have continued to manage the traditional route, but new routes have emerged:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The programme has also evolved in the disciplines<\/strong> assessed, incorporating more the humanities<\/strong>, the choice of a option<\/strong> specific and a additional option<\/strong>. Finally, the introduction of the school-leaving project<\/strong> has helped to raise the standard of the pupils\u2019 research. The qualification is now fully recognised in Switzerland<\/strong> to access the universities and polytechnics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today, A-level exams are adapting to new flexibility requirements thanks to e-learning technologies.
